Best practices for Facebook A/B Testing

Overview:


A/B Testing is a way to compare two different versions of an ad campaign by altering certain variables, such as ad images, ad text, audience, or placement.


Each version is shown to a segment of the audience, and nobody sees both versions. The performance of each version is then measured to determine which one performs better.


Before starting an A/B test, it is important to choose a hypothesis for the test, such as the belief that a custom audience strategy will outperform an interest-based audience strategy for a particular business.


To create an A/B test, you can either duplicate an existing campaign, ad set, or ad and make changes to a variable, or compare two existing campaigns or ad sets.


It is recommended to use the same budget for both versions of the test to ensure a fair comparison.


A/B Testing can be used to measure the performance of each strategy on a cost per result or cost per conversion lift basis.


It is recommended to use A/B Testing when you want to measure changes to your advertising or quickly compare two strategies, rather than testing informally by manually turning ad sets or campaigns on and off, which can lead to inefficient ad delivery and unreliable results.


A/B tests can be created in Ads Manager or in the Experiments tool.


BEST PRACTICIES


As a mention before and I will keep saying it, A/B Testing is a way to find out which version of your ads works best and how to improve future campaigns. Here are some tips to make your A/B tests clearer and more accurate:


Test one variable at a time for more conclusive results. It's best to keep your ad sets the same except for the variable you're testing


Focus on a measurable hypothesis. Think about what you want to test or what question you want to answer, and create a testable hypothesis that will help you improve future campaigns.


For example, you might ask, "Do I get better results when I change my delivery optimization?" This can be refined to something like, "Do I get a lower cost per result when I optimize for link clicks or landing page views?" From there, you can set a specific hypothesis, like "My cost per result will be lower when I optimize for landing page views." This will help you understand your results and take action on future campaigns.


Use an ideal audience for the test. Your audience should be large enough to support your test, and you shouldn't use this audience for any other campaigns you're running on Facebook or Instagram at the same time. Overlapping audiences can cause delivery problems and affect your test results.


Use an ideal time frame. For the most reliable results, we recommend running your test for at least 7 days. A/B tests can only be run for a maximum of 30 days, but tests shorter than 7 days may not give you enough data.


When creating an A/B test in Meta Ads Manager, you must choose a test schedule between 1 and 30 days. The ideal testing time frame may also depend on your objective and business vertical.


For example, if you know it usually takes your customers more than 7 days to convert after seeing an ad, you might want to run your test for a longer period of time (such as 10 days) to give these conversions a chance to happen.


Set an ideal budget for your test. Make sure your A/B Test has a budget that will give you enough results to confidently determine a winning strategy.
